Enjoyed lunch at Rakestraw Bookstore to hear Ann Patchett talk about her anthology, This is a Story of a Happy Marriage. She is a skilled writer and engaging speaker. I’ve read all her books and it’s hard to choose a favorite; they are all terrific.

Lucky you. Our bookstores in Little Rock make no effort to draw authors in for readings. I’ve asked managers at both the B&N stores as well as the independent stores and they all say the same thing, ‘The public won’t turn out.’ I don’t have anything to compare the numbers. I never had problems getting authors or the public during the time I was a book buyer at B&N up and down the East Coast. It’s almost if the book stores here believe everyone is illiterate.

Oh, Sheri, how disappointing. I’m sure people would show up if they had authors like Ann Patchett speaking.
